SUNDAY STREET: A new weekend initiative by The Mumbai Police

Mumbai has always been known for its fast-paced life; A city where everything is always on the move. Keeping up with the culture of the city, on this #SaffronStaysSunday we bring to you 8 fun activities around Mumbai that will keep you on the move.

1. THE STREET IS FOR YOU

How often do you get space in this vertically expanding city to do things you like – Cycle on a car free road, put on your roller skates and move around without any fear looming on your head? Mumbai Police now lets you do so and yes, on every Sunday.
In a unique initiative called the Sunday Street, the Mumbai Police has invited Mumbaikars to step out of their homes, with their family and friends to relax and engage in fun, sporting and wellness activities like yoga, cycling, walks, skating and various games on the streets every Sunday. And mind you, these roads will be vehicle free while you hop, skip and jump around.

Things to note:  Open to public on selected road every Sunday from 06:00 am to 10:00 am

2. JOURNEY THROUGH SPACE

All you aviation and space enthusiasts, the newly launched Hall of Aviation and Space at Nehru Science Centre is a place you cannot miss. Started in collaboration with The Airport Authority of India, it captures the journey from both the aviation and space sectors. The hall takes its visitors on tour using interactive exhibits, stories, models, artefacts, participatory visualisation tools, scale down 3D models of aircraft, helicopter, spacecraft, rockets, and much more.

Things to note:  Open to public every day including Sundays and public holidays throughout the year from 09:30 am to 06:00 pm

3. TAXI TO ELEPHANTA ISLAND

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage recognised – the Elephanta Caves, a collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. Make the trip to Elephanta Island, 10 kilometres east of Mumbai, a fun experience by hoping on to the newly launched water taxis.

Things to note:  Water Taxis to Elephanta island are available from JNPT or Belapur at an interval of about 90 to 120 minutes.

4. MUMBAI’S AFFAIR WITH PINK TRUMPETS

This gorgeous stretch will surely take you on a journey to the Land of the Rising Sun. Take a walk or drive through the roads from Ghatkopar to Vikhroli, and you can experience the Cherry Blossom of Japan in our very own Mumbai. We, of course, have the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to thank for putting up the stunning pink trumpet trees on our streets that blossom between December and April. Go grab a glimpse of the beautiful blooms before the mercury rises even further and wilts them off.

5. MUMBAI HERITAGE WALK

The best way to explore the city of Mumbai is by paying a visit to its old and historical side. Take the heritage walk tour through the popular streets of the old Mumbai to know what the city was and how it is evolved with time. From Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus to the Fort (popularly known as ‘White town’) to the University library to the magnificent Marine drive, there is a long list to explore. Let the walk begin!

6. RIDE ALONG

Hop on to a cycle and pedal around India’s most lively city, through the night! A night cycle tour offers an altogether different perspective of Mumbai’s historical monuments, temples and gardens. Don’t forget to carry your camera as you ride from Colaba along the mesmerizing queen’s necklace all the way to Gateway of India. Ride along and experience the city that never sleeps at the peak of its beauty.

Things to note:  One Night Distance on this tour is around 25 km with adequate breaks

7. CARRY ON WITH THE IPL FEVER

If you’re a fan of cricket, then this unique and unforgettable tour will definitely bowl you over! Walk past the plush grounds of the Bombay Gymkhana, explore the unconventionality of the Azad Maidan (a ground synonymous with cricket and demonstrations), dig into the history of the community gymkhanas along the Queen’s necklace and if that’s not all, drop in to the magnificent Wankhede Stadium where India won the 2011 historic Cricket World Cup!

THE BOLLYWOOD WALK

Experience India’s glamorous film industry as you navigate through the Beverly Hill of Mumbai – Bandra. A home to the who’s who of Bollywood – from King Khan, to the Umrao Jaan to the Bhai of the industry, this picturesque suburb is also known for the charming little villages, quaint churches and beautiful wall art.

Things to note:  This is walking tour of about 90 minutes
